Bourne to be a leader
Story courtesy of Burton Mail
Former Derby County striker Jeff Bourne, who went on to make a big name for himself in America, is back to his native South Derbyshire – as coach to ambitious Gresley Rovers.
The appointment of Bourne, whose playing career was wrecked by a serious knee injury, was confirmed last night by Gresley manager Frank Northwood.

Bourne takes over from Glenn West, who has had to relinquish his job as Northwood’s assistant because of work commitments.

Northwood said: “Glenn has taken a new job which means he won’t be able to devote so much time to the club, but I’m pleased to say that he wants to stay with us and compete for a place as a player. Naturally, I’m delighted that someone with the pedigree of Jeff Bourne wanted to join us. He knows his football and he’s very popular in the area. He’s already started to involve himself in training and both I and the players like what he has to offer.”

The Linton-born striker has not played seriously for about two years because of injury, but has gained vast experience of coaching during almost a decade playing in the now defunct North American Soccer League and indoor six-a-side circuit, which is all that now remains of the great American soccer dream.

After leaving Derby, Bourne had a spell with Crystal Palace before pursuing his career during the peak of the football boom across America.

At one stage he was one of the biggest names in the NASL.
