Captain's Log
These notes are being written fresh of the back of our FA Cup defeat against Ilkeston on Saturday, and I can't help having the feeling 'what could of been'.
We went to Ilkeston with a game plan, which was to play a solid 4-5-1, a formation that would protect the back four, having a deep lying midfield player, but also allow our more creative players Mickey and Gooders particular time and space to get at their back line, create opportunities and support Deano who lead the line very well. The first half I just felt we showed them too much respect and gave away two sloppy goals. Marc's free kick got us level at 1-1 and was an exquisite strike, and pulled out of the very top drawer.
The second half showed a very different Gresley side to that of the first. Having said that we conceded another very sloppy third, and then got one back almost immediately, with another wonder strike from Gooders, which
come off his shin pad I think, and then for a 15-20 minute spell, I thought we had them, I really did think we were going get an equaliser.
We had a few chances, which their keeper saved well, and we
were clearly on top, but in fairness to Ilkeston they stayed resilient, and showed what a good side they were, as they broke on the counter attack for the umpteenth time in the game and after the ball pinballed around in our box they finished us off with a decisive fourth.
Congratulations go to Ilkeston, and best wishes to them for the next round and their continuing league campaign, but for us it's now imperative we focus on the league, don't allow any cup hangover, and see how far we can really go in this league.
There is no argument tonight's game against one of the 'fancied' teams at the start of the season will be a stern test, but one we are all looking forward too.
Thanks to you all for your continued support, and the away following on Saturday was truly fantastic, and a huge thank you from all the lads for turning out in the volumes you did to support us.
