Mid-term changes stop the rot
Story courtesy of
The success of the mid-term rebuilding operation by Gresley Rovers manager Frank Northwood can be measured by their results since the 5–3 defeat at Atherstone on Boxing Day.
In five outings this year – all but one of them on opposing territory – Rovers have gained four wins and a praiseworthy draw at high-flying Lye.

The temporary crisis of confidence, precipitated by FA Cup and Vase exits in quick succession in late autumn, has long since passed. They now look set to bring their best season in the Banks’s West Midlands League to a successful conclusion.

Slowly, but surely Northwood has gone through the team, making improvements here and adjustments there to produce a good side as Moat Ground regulars have had the pleasure of watching since the heady days of Gordon Duggins, Barry Fitchett and Denis King.

It’s worth noting that only half the side which began the season so impressively but then slipped into decline is still in evidence.

Carl Austin has taken over from Martin McNamara in goal; Ian Earley and Glen West have transferred the defence at left back and sweeper respectively; John Laws and Dave King have added pace, panache and power to midfield and Reg Priest.
