Selby provides competition for Wright
Ian Wright

Gresley Rovers goalkeeper Ian Wright is facing a battle to retain his No 1 jersey next season after boss Brian Kenning snapped up the experienced Richard Selby from Hinkley United.
Kenning sees Selby, who also had a successful spell with Shepshed Dynamo, as the ideal man to put pressure on Wright.

On the whole, Wright did well last season when he was promoted from the reserves when Stuart Ford joined Hednesford, but there were errors in his game.

Kenning knows Selby will not be content with a place on the bench and hopes his arrival will have a positive effect on Wright, increasing competition.

Said the Moat boss: "Richard wants to be the first choice keeper and I think his arrival will create some healthy competition between him and Ian.

"He is in his thirties and has the experience I was looking for to help Ian and push him.

"Overall I thought Ian was excellent last season. he made a few mistakes but he did very well when he came into the team.

"Richard will put pressure on Ian, which is what we want, and we will just have to see how he reacts."

Kenning has continued the revamp of his coaching staff by appointing former Stapenhill assistant Gary Norton to run the reserves alongside Alan Titterton.

The arrival of Norton follows the appointment of Steve Devine as kenning's first team assistant.

The Moat boss wants to bring a continuity to how football is played throughout the club, with the first team, reserves and youth side playing the same system next season in a bid to develop talent.

"When I first came to Gresley, Gary was in the reserves and I was impressed by his attitude, and I was disappointed when he left the club," said Kenning.

"When I came to thinking about changing the coaching set-up I suggested to Alan that we contact Gary and I am delighted he has joined us.

"All three of our teams will play the same way next season as we need to develop our young players and I think that will help us achieve that."
