Frank tells Butler to go

Gresley Rovers’ boss Frank Northwood has told striker Dave Butler to find a new club.
Northwood announced his decision after seeing Rovers sliding out of the Banks’s West Midlands League top six when they were beaten 2 – 1 at home to Rushall Olympic on Saturday.

Butler was substituted after 60 minutes and later told he was no longer required at the Moat Ground.

Northwood said: “I can accept players being out of form, but I’m not having people in my side who aren’t prepared to put in any effort.

“He did well for me at the start of the season, but as far as I’m concerned he’s pulled on a Gresley shirt for the last time.”

Butler’s departure will pave the way for Reg Priest to stake a claim for regular first-team football.

Northwood said: “Reg could have had a hat trick when I sent him on as a substitute. I accept he missed a couple of good chances, but the important thing for me was that he got in the right positions.”

Butler is the third player discarded by Northwood in the last two weeks. Player coach Roger Davies was sacked as the sequel to a smouldering personality clash with Northwood and last week the Gresley boss signed Wednesfield goalkeeper Nicky Griffiths as a replacement for out-of-form Martin McNamara.

Butler was to joint top scorer last season with 11 goals even though he only joined the club in February and has ten goals to his credit this term.
