The tortuous injury problems of Gresley Rovers striker Kieron Smith have taken another turn for the worst.
Smith, who recently attempted a comeback in Sunday football only to break down after a few minutes, had been told he was suffering from a torn cartilage.

However, the injury has now been re-diagnosed as a snapped cruciate ligament – the same injury that kept Paul Gascoigne out of the game for over a season.

The bad news for Smith is that he now faces major knee surgery, and will not play for at least 12 months following the operation.

Smith said: “I’m gutted about it – I feel terrible.”

Rovers boss Steve Dolby said: “It’s very bad news for Kieron and the club and obviously makes the signing of Mark Hurst more important to us.”
