Gresley Rovers defender John Barry could be out of football for the rest of the season after a tragic work accident.
The 24-year-old Long Eaton based right back broke his thigh after falling through a ceiling on Wednesday. Barry had an operation yesterday and plates were inserted in his leg.

The injury merely adds to a growing list of worries for Rovers boss Steve Dolby on the eve of tomorrow’s FA Cup second qualifying round visit of Gainsborough Trinity (3pm).

With striker Martin Devaney (groin) and midfielder Graeme Rigg (collar bone) already ruled out and midfielder Tony Marsden still suspended, Dolby also faces losing top scorer Paul Acklam, rated as “extremely doubtful” with a thigh strain.

Utility man Scott Elliott is also struggling with a groin strain while full back Dave Swainston went home from training last night with ‘flu.

But Dolby, who watched Gainsborough come from 3-1 down to gain a 4-4 FA Trophy replay draw at Solihull on Wednesday, was biting bullets today, saying: “Situations like this show the benefits of having a big squad. It’s a very disappointing injury list and some of them are long-term, but it’s something we’ve just got to play through.”
