Kieron making all the right moves

Gresley Rovers striker Kieron Smith this week revealed the secret behind Rovers’ incredible surge to the top of the Beazer Midland Division – his teams fierce determination to do well.
Smith, who chose Saturday’s 5-2 win at Stourbridge to score his first goal of the season and followed up with the second in Tuesday’s “best yet” victory at Redditch said: “We’ve had the same attitude to every game since the first day of the season against Dudley. I really wanted to win that match and I had the same feeling about the games at Stourbridge and Redditch.

“We knew we were going to be playing two of the better sides and we all came out with the same attitude – and it paid off for us.”

But few Rovers players were more delighted than Smith after his double strike.

“It feels great to have scored in the league – I was starting to think the goals were never going to come – especially after I had one disallowed for offside against Bridgnorth.

“I am pleased with my fitness and my game and I like to think the manager appreciates the work I do off the ball. But I’m a forward and forwards are there to score goals.”

Now the 32-year-old from Sutton-in-Ashfield aims to maintain his goal streak in tomorrow’s potentially hazardous FA Cup first qualifying round tie at Newcastle Town.

“They played well in a pre-season friendly against us but we should have won there in the Vase last season. Full marks to them – they came from behind to beat us. But everyone’s giving 110 per cent at present and if you work hard things have got to go right – most of the time, anyway.”
