Rovers in facelift plea
Story courtesy of
Gresley Rovers are calling on fans to dig for victory – and help transform the Moat Ground.
Supporters are being urged to turn out with pickaxes, shovels and paint brushes for a Saturday morning “work-in” at the ageing Moat Street stadium – to help with a facelift aimed at changing the ground “beyond recognition.”

The appeal is part of the club’s drive to achieve Beazer Homes League status next season.

And with the players on the brink of doing their bit on the field by winning the West Midlands League, club development officer Frank McArdle hopes an army of fans will turn out to help the club’s backroom boys do their bit off it.

Explains McArdle: “It’s part of an all-out attempt to get promotion. Fans can do their share of the work by turning up on Saturday morning between 9am and noon with shovels, pickaxes or paint brushes – there’s something for everyone to do and no-one will be turned away.”

Tonnes of soil and hardcore need to be carted away from the ground, with planned improvements including covering the entire perimeter of the ground with paving slabs.

Says McArdle: “The club has recognised that the Moat Ground must change beyond recognition. But if we are to achieve a higher standard of football we can only do it with everyone’s help. The Moat Ground has hardly changed since 1911 but it can’t look like it does at the moment any longer – it’s got to end up looking like a new ground.”

Volunteers will be kept supplied with tea during Saturday’s stint.
