Rovers fans in a fury

Gresley Rovers fans protested with their feet after Wednesfield upped admission charges for Saturday’s West Midlands League game at Amos Lane.
After the home club had increased admission from their usual £1.50 to £2 in anticipation of a bumper turnout of Gresley fans, visiting supporters voiced their protest by boycotting the Wednesfield social club after the match.

Wednesfield protested that they always raised their charges for “big” games but Rovers boss Frank Northwood said afterwards: “I’m not happy about the way they’ve ripped our fans off.”

Northwood was a lot happier with the outcome of the game, Rovers winning 3-0 with Brian Beresford hitting his 29th and 30th goal of the season in the second half – a result made all the sweeter by the news that title rivals Chasetown had gone down 1-0 at home to Hinckley Athletic.

Striker Kieron Smith limped off with a second half leg injury and Northwood awaits a fitness report before naming his side for tomorrow’s trip to Oldbury Town (7.30).
