Gresley Rovers manager Frank Northwood has scooped a national non-league soccer award for leading the Moatmen’s magnificent exploits last season.
Northwood is hailed as “one of the game’s real gems” in receiving the merit honour from the FA Non-League Directory which has just been published.

Last term Northwood and Rovers fought out their titanic FA Vase clash beneath the twin towers of Wembley and swept all before them in capturing the Banks’s West Midlands League title.

The veteran boss was told he had won the award minutes before Rovers kicked off their 4-0 West Midlands League beating of hosts Malvern Town on Saturday.

Northwood said: “I’m staggered and obviously I’m overjoyed. The award belongs to the players who have done me proud. I feel highly honoured – it was a great achievement getting to Wembley and to be recognised like this is better than all the money going.”

The directory applauds Northwood for having “assembled an excellent Gresley side last season”, for helping provide a memorable Vase final and winning their county cup and league championship.

Saturday brought more joy for Northwood with their victory over Malvern, who they will meet again if they finally overcome Chasetown in the second replay of their West Midlands League Cup tie at the Moat Ground tomorrow night (7.30pm).

New signing Frank Nuttall and Richard Wardle are ineligible for tomorrow’s match which paves the way for Neil Lovell and Ryan Venning, who missed Saturday’s game, to join the fray.
