Short staying Guest has Darkes lift-less
Story courtesy of
The Moat Ground merry-go-round moved round a pace this week with two players set to leave the club barely having joined.
The exodus was heralded when Rovers received seven days’ notice from Oldbury United of their intention to approach Michael Guest, a midfielder or defender who only put pen to paper for the South Derbyshire club a couple of weeks ago.

Guest got a roasting from manager Frank Northwood after going down with cramp during his one – and possibly only – appearance this season for the club he rejoined on September 12th from Bromsgrove Rovers.

Northwood, who had earlier declared the player an asset to Rovers “who says he’s as fit as he has ever been” complained “you don’t go down with cramp if you’re fit” and ordered Guest to put himself in full working order.

Guest’s response, apparently, was to go away and not come back – with subsequent moves to take him to Oldbury.

One can only hope that if Guest, who only recently told me how delighted he was to be back at “a terrific club like Gresley” does make the move to Oldbury no-one there has the effrontery to comment on his personal fitness, the colour of his socks or his taste in music – may be on his bike again.

The upshot is that a second newcomer, Jason Darkes, may now also face a premature end to his Moat Ground career.

Darkes does not drive and relied on getting a lift from his Birmingham area home to the Moat Ground…..from Michael Guest.

Northwood, meanwhile, has “other irons in the fire” to replace the duo.

However, it does seem faintly ridiculous when players can change clubs like other people change shirts.
