Goal hero collapses as Rovers crash out

VS Rugby striker Ian Crawley was rushed to hospital last night after collapsing at the end of his side’s 3-0 FA Cup replay win over Gresley Rovers.
Crawley had just made a goalscoring return as substitute after being sidelined after a hernia operation.

But after the final whistle of a game won 3-0 by Rugby he collapsed as the two side were walking from the field and was taken to hospital believed to be suffering concussion.

Crawley, once the subject of a £12,000 bid by Burton Albion, was allowed home after treatment but was advised not to play for ten days.

The incident put a damper on a powerful display from the home side that sent Rovers spinning to their biggest defeat since last May.

Rovers boss Frank Northwood said afterwards: “For 60 minutes we matched them and matched them and matched them but the steam went out of us as soon as they scored and there was only going to be one winner after that.

“I think you could say they shut us up. But you could see why they’ve earned their place at the top of the Beazer League. I fancy them to go all the way to the first round proper.”

Midfielder Michael Guest, who has made only one appearance for Gresley since moving from Bromsgrove Rovers two weeks ago, could be on the move again.

Rovers have received seven days’ notice from Oldbury United that they tend to approach the player and Northwood said last night: “He was told to go away and get fit and we haven’t heard from him since.”
