Awards crown glory season
Story courtesy of Burton Mail
Wembley hero Kieron Smith crowned a glorious season by lifting the Gresley Rovers Supporters Player of the Year award last night.
Smith topped the poll ahead of keeper Bob Aston and sweeper Steve Astley, with skipper Richard Denby picking up the Players’ Player-of-the-Year trophy and effervescent midfielder Neil Lovell the first team Sportsman-of-the-Year award.

And there was a special trophy, too, for defender Gil Land, who has not missed a first team game for two seasons.

Club chairman Peter Hall – who himself won the Clubman-of-the-Year trophy – told more than 200 guests at the Bass Sports and Social Club: “We’ve had the kind of season most clubs dream about. We won the league by a mile, we were Wembley finalists and, hopefully, we will be Derbyshire Senior Cup winners.”

Ian Little, on behalf of sponsor’s Bass, said: “No sponsor could be as proud as we are of Gresley. We are over the moon with the way Gresley have displayed Bass’s name on their shirts for us. Our sponsorship continues next year and the next year until you get us back to Wembley and win.”

Manager Frank Northwood told his players and their guests: “Everybody that’s worn that strip this season has done Gresley proud – very, very proud. And our supporters have done even better.”
