Gresley Denied The Points

You could see from the celebrations after scoring their equaliser and at the final whistle that Leek were mightily relieved at grabbing a point at the Moat Ground they barely deserved.

Deep into time added on Leek managed to get the ball into Gresley's net despite the scorer looking suspiciously off side when he prodded home from close in.

Gresley's manager Damion Beckford-Quailey had to make changes with Toby Fura, Jamie Barrett and Matt Melbourne not recovering from injury and Courtney Meade unavailable because of work commitments.

The Moatmen started briskly and were in front with just 2 minutes on the clock. A long ball deep into the Leek half saw visiting keeper Chris Martin hesitate on the very edge of his area and the ball was only cleared as far as Ben Harris who immediately lobbed the ball back over the head of the keeper and into the empty net.

Gresley went close to adding to their start when Reece Morris made a run down the left and feeding Eddy Samba who fired into the side netting.

Leek should have leveled things when a half cleared ball came to Chris Budrys but his volley flew the wrong side of the far upright. Harris then tested Martin with a low shot which he managed to grab at the second attempt.

Leek's aim was still poor when Tom France cut in from the right but he too couldn't get his shot on target sliding the ball past the far post.

The only save Peet had to make so far in the game was a good one when Jordan Johnson's shot was pushed away for a corner.

Gresley had the first chance of the second half when Pearson Mwanyongo turned in the area only to shoot over the bar. Tom Manship fired just wide before Samba brought out a good save from Martin with the keeper denying the forward, who was in on goal, with a good block.

Tendai Chitiza almost scored a spectacular goal but his overhead kick in the area was deflected for a corner. Manship struck a shot from distance which dipped but not enough as the attempt cleared the bar.

It was a disappointing end to the game for Gresley. The game had gone into the second minute of the four added on when referee Mr Tinsley missed a blatant foul on a Gresley player just outside the area. Play was allowed to continue and the ball was not cleared and fell to substitute Tim Grice who looked a yard or so offside and he poked the ball home from close in.

Gresley almost grabbed a deserved winner three minutes later when a cross from the left by substitute Michael Pearson was narrowly headed wide by Chitiza.
