Match Report  |  Gresley FC vs Sheffield FC

Despite the score line this game was more entertaining than it would suggest but good chances at both ends were at a premium as both defences came out on top.

Caretaker manager Dave Langston took charge of his final game and with the departure of Chris Richards to Mickleover Sports, Lucas Harrison came into the left back slot.

Gresley started well against their high-flying opponents with Martin Smyth striking the post at the far post after racing in to the box as the ball flew across the face of goal.

Gary Ricketts, making his Moat Ground debut, then tried his luck with an overhead kick from Lavell White's cross which went over the bar. Jamie Barrett was next to try his hand with a volley which was straight into the midriff of keeper Thomas Dunn.

Sheffield began to come into the game but still could not carve out the telling ball to open up the home defence. Gresley keeper Rob Peet was called into action just before the break pushing away a low driven shot. While at the other end Jordan Ball managed to turn in the area before hitting a low shot which was held by Dunn.

Sheffield began the second half brightly forcing two early corners followed by Benny Iglehon firing a low shot from distance wide.

The action returned to the opposite end and Ball did well to pick up the loose ball before turning and firing a shot which Ricketts at the far post was about to pounce on but for the attention of defender denying him.

Gresley went close again on the hour mark. A free kick from Jack Langston was fumbled by the keeper and the ball then appeared to hit the head of Carlise who had raced in at the far post but the effort again went agonisingly wide of the far post.

Sheffield substitute Shaq McKenzie had arguably the best of his side's chances when he found himself in space but fired over the bar as the game become stretched as both sides were looking for a winner.

Langston ran onto a superb ball from Ricketts which split the visitor's back line but the attention of covering defender Reece Littlejohn did enough to put the Gresley man off and his effort ballooned over the bar.

The final say of the game came from McKenzie who managed to get in at the far post before drilling a shot which Peet held onto.

It was a fitting end to the game as neither side deserved to lose the game or concede a goal.
