Nottingham At The Double

For the second game running Gresley hit four goals but this time they came away with all three points.

As with their previous game the visitors found themselves two goals to the good after the first twelve minutes or so through two superb headers from Michael Nottingham making it four goals in the last four games.

However, they added a third goal from Dean Oliver to make the game a little more comfortable but the league's top scorer David Waple scored his thirteenth goal of the season to reduce the arrears before the break.

Gresley started well coming out of the blocks fast and found themselves in front after just five minutes. An inviting cross from the right from Mickey Lyons picked out Nottingham who powered home his header from the penalty spot past the helpless Hayes keeper Adam Jenkins.

The second goal also came from the big defender this time a long high free kick by Gary Hateley from deep in his own half found Nottingham in space in the area and he placed his header across Jenkins in into the net at the far post.

Minutes later Gresley almost added another when Oliver made a good run down the right and crossed for Richard Hanslow who hit a superb volley but Jenkins made a terrific reflex save to turn the effort onto the bar and away.

On 22 minutes the visitors did score. Oliver fastened onto a long ball, shook off his marker and slipped the ball between Jenkins and the near post.

If Gresley thought they were now if for an easy afternoon they were rudely reminded that they were still in a contest when a free kick from Joseph McNulty eventually found its way to Waple who made no mistake from close in smashing the ball past Hateley. Gresley came back with another chance as Hanslow almost fastened onto a quickly taken free kick at the near post.

As the final seconds of the first half ticked away Marc Goodfellow was inches away from putting Hanslow's cross, after he'd robbed Jenkins of the ball, from the right into the net but under pressure from a defender he put his effort over the bar.

Gresley came out for the second half in determined mood and went close again when a snap shot from Hanslow was blocked by Jenkins and the ball rebounded to Spencer who's first time shot struck the outside of the near post.

It wasn't all one way traffic however, because Hayes hit back and it took a goal line clearance from Nottingham stooping to head away an effort and then Ben Haseley cracked in a shot that had Hateley beaten but his shot too struck the far post and flew across the face of the goal and away from danger.

Gresley added a vital fourth goal from the result of a fast flowing move from box to box which ended with a pinpoint pass from Mickey Lyons which sliced the home defence in two sending Spencer racing down the right and he took his chance superbly firing across Jenkins and into the far corner of the net.

To their credit Hayes kept going and were denied another goal as Jamie Barrett made a spectacular diving header to clear the ball off the line but Gresley hung on for a fully deserved three points.

Two great goals and solid defending. He's proving to be a great signing for the club.
