Rovers Slip To Away Defeat

Gresley Rovers could feel a tad unlucky to come away from Cantilever Park with at least a share of the spoils.

Manager Gary Norton made several changes to the line-up bringing in new signings striker Brian Woodhall and midfielder Gavin Saunders from Hinckley United and Willenhall Town respectively.

Also among the changes were skipper Carl Slater slotted into the Right Back slot and Martyn Rowntree replacing Tony Hemmings at Left Back and striker Stefan Marshall failed a fitness test

Jermaine Hollis was given the start ahead of Chris Sleath and Jamie Hood continued in his midfield role.

Rovers started brightly and went close to opening the scoring as early as three minutes when Dan Douglas got on the end of Saunders' free kick but the defender could only half hit a shot straight at home keeper Diego Bassanini.

Warrington hit back with Gavin Lynch hitting his shot across the goalmouth and then former Moatman Karl Brown's free kick hit the defensive wall and bounced nicely for Francis Smith who hit a tremendous shot that was only just wide of the mark.

Bassanini then did well to block the lively Woodhall as Rovers applied some pressure.

However, Warrington took the lead seconds later. Rovers had been forced into an early change as Slater had to be replaced by Tom Groves after suffering a groin injury.

Maybe this caused Rovers to switch off and the homeside took full advantage. On 29 minutes a long ball down the middle from Nicky Prescott picked out Thomas Lamb whose first attempt was well blocked by Rovers keeper David Clarke but the striker was quick to react to the loose ball and smashed it back into the empty net.

Clarke kept Gresley in the game when he saved from Brown at his near post.

The visitors could have gone in at the break all square when a shot from Miles Chamberlain flew a fraction wide after Warrington had failed to clear a free kick.

Rovers had two early chances of levelling things in the second half with both falling for David Blenkinsopp.

Warrington themselves went close with Clarke gathering at the second attempt after failing to hold onto Steve Everitt's shot.

On 73 minutes a Shaun Ridgway free-kick caused a scramble in the Warrington penalty area and the ball fell to Chamberlain whose shot was cleared off the line by ?? Holmes.

Rovers were pushing forward trying to get the goal they deserved when Warrington only half cleared their lines. Substitute Paul Edwards lifted the ball back into the box and Hood challenged and the ball fell for Douglas whose shot somehow picked out Woodall.

The striker hit a shot that looked certain to find the back of the net but the giant Warrington keeper managed to stretch out a hand and push the ball away for a corner.

With just a couple of minutes remaining Rovers had one final chance when Hood laid the ball back for Ridgway but he hit his shot over the bar.
