Moatmen beat the Magpies
The
game played at Eton Park and in front of a sparse crowd saw a first half Shaun
Bedward goal settle the tie.
In a furious first 10 minutes saw the Magpies create two very good chances,
which were perhaps the only chances of a first- half dominated by the Rovers.
Paul Riley put in a low drive after a promising left wing run that he saw bounce
the wrong side of the far post but Willis Francis managed to pull the ball back
from the by-line. David Cross waiting on the edge of the penalty area could
only put his hurriedly taken shot well over the bar.
Rovers then made the breakthrough with a well-taken goal when new signing Chris
Parkins took advantage of a mistake by Mark Warren and put a perfect pass to
Shaun Bedward who had found space at the edge of the penalty area.
With an inch perfect shot the striker wrong-footed Saul Deeney in, and put
the ball into the bottom corner of the Magpie's goal.
Things could have been worse for Warren when he attempted to clear a ball that
he sliced almost into his own goal.
Just
after half-time James Lindley saw what was some rare activity when he saved
superbly from a Mark Dunn shot, and turned the ball round his post.
Manager John McGinlay used the evening to try out his squad making several
substitutions in the second half.
Deeney made a hash of clearing a ball which gifted Rovers triallist David Shaw
with a clear chance to score. However he waited to long on the ball and was
tackled before taking his shot.
Ian Bluck put in a very good cross, which found the head of John Allcock, his
header glancing just wide.
Overall this was a very good performance in what were
sweltering conditions.
