Gresley Rovers vs Loughborough United Reserves

Gresley Rovers 6 - 0 Loughborough United Reserves

The Loughborough United Reserves defence was ripped apart by Rovers in an East Midlands League Premier Division clash at the Moat Ground on Saturday 26th September 1970.

Three goals in each half brought our tally to a magnificent 27 in only eight matches.

Barry Fitchett returned to the side after injury and he dictated the pace of the game giving us the chance to take control in the middle of the field.

Bob Liddle started the blitz by scoring two goals. The first was a glorious header stooping low to head home a right wing cross from Walker, whereas the second was a fitting end to a fine build up by the wingers.

United included four first team players but Rovers held them in check and only Garland promised to spark off his team.

Keith Mitchell got the third goal and the first of a memorable hat trick stemmed from a free kick taken by Fitchett, He tapped the ball sideways to Keith who hit a left foot past the wall and into the far corner.

Five minutes it was four, he latched onto a ball after a defensive mix up to score at the near post. Seconds later Francis got onto the score sheet when he scored with a powerful drive.

Mitchell got the sixth before Fitchett missed a penalty near the end.
