Gresley Rovers vs Barlestone St Giles

Rovers held up by Moore – Andy Parker – Burton Mail

Possibly the most remarkable thing about Gresley Rovers’ friendly with Barlestone St Giles at the Moat Ground last night was the attendance.

But an excellent attendance of 181 was not rewarded for its loyalty by a goal feast.

Gresley dominated their Influence Combination rivals throughout but found keeper Bob Aston’s understudy Tony Moore, who turns out for Barlestone when not required at the Moat Ground, in confident form.

Moore gave Moat boss Frank Northwood a reminder of his abilities with good saves in both halves.

He was beaten only once, when former Burton Albion striker Chris Myer, having a trial with Gresley after dropping out of senior football earlier in the season, tapped home the rebound after Moore failed to hold a swerving Richard Denby shot.

Northwood was also able to test the potential of a trio of players from Rovers’ successful youth side.

Derby County trialist David Mead, a wide midfield player, received warm applause after some eye-catching skill, while another 17-year-old, defender Jonathon Jordan, could have capped his first senior run out with a goal had his accuracy from eight yards had been better.

Instead, his shot flew over the bar. Then the youngster’s error let St Giles’ substitute Ian Moore in with a great chance to equalise in the final minute, but his effort suffered a similar fate.
